Sean Carr Lining have met the SSIP core criteria recognised by the HSE and other SSIP accreditation schemes. Meeting the SSIP core criteria demonstrates that we are serious about health and safety and use an effective health and safety management system to ensure that any work we have engaged in is carried out without risk to health and safety.

We carried out this extensive project in December 2020 in Market Drayton. Our contracted work included the installation of a stormwater attenuation tank with the addition of storm crates. Storm crates or soakaway crates, as they are also known, are an interlocking crate system that allows surface water to be stored and released gradually back slowly over time into the ground or sewer network.

What is a stormwater attenuation tank?

A stormwater attenuation tank allows for surface and rainwater storage, which can be a requirement when new housing, commercial developments or car parks are built. The soakaway crates have various load ratings that indicate their storage capacity. They are also suitable for use beneath car parks.

Stormwater crates have an ability to store up to 97% of their capacity and are a highly effective way to capture rainwater, making them the ideal solution for groundwater infiltration such as that carparks with a large tarmac area. Their ability to withstand up to an 80 tonne vehicle weight parking on top of them is another reason that their use is widespread in such areas. Providing a low cost, easy to set up solution for large areas such as carparks, whilst they may be a lower capacity solution than an attenuation tank, their ability to stack together below ground to create a solution for excess rain or groundwater storage makes them ideal. They offer a basically maintenance free and economical solution for many sites.

Our work

Sean Carr Lining contracted job was to install geotextile, geomembrane and polystorm/polylock/aquastorm soakaway crates to an area spanning of 800m2 that required us to install 1800 crates to give adequate rainwater storage. Our team of five technicians all with TWI/CSWIP, CSCS and manual handling worked tirelessly over 3 days to complete the installation within the timeframe and budget of our client.

We used a high quality 1mm HDPE geomembrane liner, along with an impermeable membrane and permeable geotextile protector fleece to ensure lasting integrity of the liner to work effectively alongside the storm crates.

Sean Carr supplied and installed an Elephant Pool lining at a Safari Park in the West Midlands. It took 3 TWI/CSWIP technicians 1 week to install a geotextile liner and a 1-5mm HDPE geomembrane liner to create a pond for the elephants to drink, bathe and play in. The pond covered an area of approximately 2000m².

During October 2020, Sean Carr Lining were delighted to be chosen to supply and install liners for safe effective rainwater removal and storage to create an attenuation basin. Accepted as the best practice method for stormwater storage by the developer of a new build housing estate in Weymouth, we were delighted to travel when asked to carry out this installation.

The project

The creation of an attenuation basin on any site allows safe and contained storage for excess rain and storm water as it allows for its release over time into the sewer system at a controlled rate. This removes much of the potential flooding risk caused by the inability for excess water to drain safely. In areas where rainwater or river breaches may otherwise cause sudden surges in water that needs somewhere to go, this is especially important or for areas where the natural drainage is insufficient or indeed removed through building work.

Legislation now requires that provision be included for effective removal and storage of excess water when planning for housing and commercial developments. Areas of land that does not offer scope for sufficient safe natural water drainage requires a manmade solution and the addition of attenuation or suds ponds is one of the best methods to provide for this. Sean Carr Lining team of highly trained and experienced technicians bring together many years of experience in the creation of suitable attenuation basins and this contract covered a 3000m2 area within this new Weymouth housing development site.

The work

Our highly experienced team of TWI/CSWIP certified technicians worked to the development company’s budget of £30k and we were onsite a little over 3 days to carry out the installation of both a geomembrane liner and geotextile protector to create this new attenuation basin. The addition of a geotextile protector offers further support to the liner and may be recommended for some applications.

We used a 1mm LLDPE linear low-density polyethylene geomembrane liner which received additional protection from a 300g/m2 geotextile fleece to create an attenuation basin that would support the rainwater harvesting and stormwater storage required by the new housing development.
